The Calyx DAC 24/192 is a leading edge product using the very latest digital conversion technology, in a simple aluminium enclosure that is so easy to use, and even easier to enjoy!

There are currently two words that get audiophiles excited right now, one is asynchronous, the other is Sabre. The Calyx is an asynchronous USB DAC capable of receiving up to 24bit/192kHz data, so from a format and protocol point of view, this is the best possible way of extracting the data from your computer. As well as the USB input, the Calyx DAC also has a single coaxial input for that legacy CD player or DAT recorder.

From a technical point of view, the Calyx is all cutting edge. The Sabre DAC chip is the hottest chip right now, and the Calyx does not compromise here. Not content to use a single DA converter, the Calyx uses 8 Sabre 32bit converters! For those not familiar, the SABRE32 Reference audio DAC series is the world’s highest performance 32-bit audio DAC solution. "With ESS patented 32-bit Hyperstream™ DAC architecture and Time Domain Jitter Eliminator, the SABRE32 Reference Stereo DAC delivers an unprecedented DNR of up to 135dB and THD+N of -120dB, the industry’s highest performance level that will satisfy the most demanding audio enthusiasts."

As well, the Calyx DAC has two separate clock generators, one for 44.1/88.2/176.4kHz and one for 48/96/192kHz data rates. Finally, the analogue output stage gives you the choice of unbalanced RCA or fully balanced XLR outputs. If you are using this with a computer the Calyx DAC will take power from the USB buss, making setup even simpler, one less wall wart!

Przynajmniej w moim systemie). Oczywiście budowa i funkcjonalność Femto nie pozostawia wątpliwości."

OK — I don't feel like writing a long review… Considering the level of differences between the two component and the price difference (Ayre is $1,000 more) Look at my equipment and decide if I have good taste or not…. My conclusion: The Calyx _trounces_ the Ayre. Boy do I love my Calyx. I did not know I liked it that much until tonight….

Ayre: muted, boring, uninvolving, lifeless, slow, (where is the PRAT?)
Calyx: generous, spooky-real, lively, fast, reveals the acoustics of the venue, amazing PRAT

I see _absolutely_ no reason to prefer a Calyx over a QB-9

Now, I generally love Ayre's stuff. It's a great company, and everything. Really. But the Calyx DAC is a totally awesome piece of gear.

With the Calyx I consistently preferred digital music played back via USB from my laptop rather than CDs through my CEC transport via S/PDIF. The CEC remained on the sidelines while I instinctively went for the laptop. Computer-based music was actually clearer, more open, more insightful and more compelling! That was a personal first...The laptop/Cardas/Calyx combo in this review retails for about a quarter of my CEC/MIT/Audiomat rig but was at least as musically involving and could play hi-rez recordings in native mode up to 24-bit/192kHz.

This was amazing to me. Finally truly excellent digital sound can be had at everyman prices. Forget everything bad I’ve ever said about computer audio. I now take it back. The Calyx 24/192 DAC has certainly tempted me to ditch the silver disc for good. Do check it out if you can.

My conclusion: The Calyx trounces the Ayre. Boy do I love my Calyx. I did not know I liked it that much until tonight….Ayre: muted, boring, uninvolving, lifeless, slow, (where is the PRAT?) Calyx: generous, spooky-real, lively, fast, reveals the acoustics of the venue, amazing PRAT...the Calyx is in another league in terms of what it gives back. It provides much more pleasure for less money. People on a budget could really get a

Calyx and be set for a very, very long time...

In addition: the Calyx makes the speakers disappear and the music appear from anywhere in the space without constraints. The Ayre doesn't image as well.

Calyx DAC 24/192 has been exciting to get acquainted with. It plays incredibly well, actually just as good as my own Lyngdorf. And usually you have to go up into higher price ranges, to achieve the same precision as here...Calyx 24/192 DAC is for those who have switched to streaming via NAS or PC, and want a better sound quality than many of the small USB DAC's available on the market. Or they have an existing CD player with an aged D/A section. With the Calyx we move up into sound comparable to CD players which are several times its own price.

Digital Audio Blog

The Calyx sounds smoother and a bit less immediate compared to the Weiss...The smoothness of the Calyx is quite deceptive, it's just as detailed and dynamic, but with a relaxed and rounder quality. Music is refined, open and articulate but never calling attention to itself. "Neutral" and "extended" sums up the sound of the Calyx DAC...It just gives you music in a balanced and refined form.

The more I listen to the Calyx, the more apparent that I really enjoy it. The high frequencies sound airy and open, yet with excellent detail. Midrange is very integrated with the highs creating a realistic portrait of the music. Bass is quite deep and full, and gives good fundamentals to music's rhythm...It has better extension than the excellent Tranquility SE DAC, for instance. The Calyx is also dead quiet. The background is so black that all the little low level details are rendered very clearly. One can hear not only those details, but can also place them with precision in the sound stage...

I am happy to report that computer USB playback takes the Calyx to a different level altogether. A very good DAC is now an extraordinary DAC!... when driven through USB from a carefully set up computer rig will give you the sound that approaches state of the digital art.

Hi-Fi World

DAC SHOOTOUT! ...the openness and detail of the soundstage made for one of the strongest performances of this piece during this review...USB performance was also good, finding a level of detail in often poorly recorded material that most of the others here couldn't match. A very strong all rounder then..

To nadal awangarda i ciekawostka. DAC ma potężne, dociążone brzmienie a jednocześnie świetnie prowadzi bas. Bardzo dobra szczegółowosc i glebia. Jeśli ktos szuka prostoty designu i dobrej jakości (Calyx ma tylko dwa wejscia usb i coax) to powinien koniecznie posłuchać tego daca.
